Looking to the Rock

Looking to the Rock

“From the end of the earth I call to you when my heart is faint. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” (Psalm 61:2)

Waves crashing. Sweeping across the large rocks, it has a force that appears untameable, unmoveable, and breathtaking.

Yet, there is beauty in the powerful waves. Their uncertainty can captivate our sense of awe. There is a mysterious element to what we cannot control, and it sends us to our knees.

As I look out upon the waters that roar, I am reminded of the One who once stilled the waves with just a few words. Jesus calmed the storm during His ministry as he traveled with His disciples (Mark 4:35-41). When all hope was lost, He quieted what seemed to be untameable.

And I often think of how many times the Lord has calmed my own “waves.” The storms that surround me. Or the waters of my soul.

King David also knew what it was like to be engrossed in the waves of uncertainty. This stirred within his heart a variety of emotions, which many of us can relate to. There were surely moments of happiness but also circumstances that left this heart faint.

Yet, it was in these times that he could lean in and uncover the beauty his heart was yearning for. He was reminded of the One who was above it all.

Though his heart was faint, David sought hope in the living God. He writes:

from the end of the earth I call to you when my heart is faint. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” (Psalm 61:2).

The circumstances that surrounded him caused sorrow within David’s heart.

Yet, David recognized his own place. His limitations. He was among the waves of uncertainty, not above them. And he was incapable of lifting himself out of the seas of despair on his own strength.

Rather, he had to look upon One who was higher. Who was all-powerful and sovereign over all.

That is who our Heavenly Father has revealed Himself to be.

You and I are given the same invitation: To turn our eyes upwards, toward the Father. For He is the only One in our lives who remains the same. He is steadfast.

The Bible says:

“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you” (Isaiah 26:3).

We are also reminded to continue

”looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:2).

But how do we keep our eyes on the Lord? Many of us absorb a lot of information throughout the day, and it may feel challenging at times to stay focused on God. However, continuing to look to Christ is often reminding ourselves of Who He is and His promises daily. We must dwell upon these truths as frequently as we can. It requires discipline.

What does this look like? Spending time praying to Him. Asking Him to come into your life, or as a child pouring out your heart to God. Talk to our Heavenly Father, and give Him every area of your life. Reading the Scriptures, it is God’s love letter to you. Study it diligently. Worship Him. This can take on many forms. Music is a beautiful gift, and walking in nature can be a wonderful way for your heart to engage in praise, for the beauty of creation points us back to our Creator.

Therefore, in this place, we are able to find and embrace the beauty found within the waves of uncertainty. For it turns our eyes upon our Heavenly Father.

From this place, we can experience perfect peace.

Simply because He is our Rock, who is above all.

Blessings,
