Where will You Go when Life gets Difficult?
Where will you go?
When the world is in chaos, when life does not make sense, or when the truth becomes challenging to proclaim, will you look to yourself? Or will you look to Jesus?
These are the questions that are present within the human heart. They are honest. Yet, each individual must answer it for themselves.
The book of John uncovers a particular time within Jesus’ earthly ministry and helps us. We encounter a story where we find a crowd following Jesus. He performed various signs, including feeding the five thousand (John 6:1-5) and walking on water (John 6:16-21). The signs and wonders intrigued many people. They persisted in following Him, traveling by boat to hear His words. However, Jesus said that what truly captivated the crowd’s interest was their filling: what they got from Jesus.
He challenged their motives. Jesus began proclaiming teaching that was more “controversial.” He taught that He was all they needed, the very bread of life. Instead of looking to signs and wonders alone, Jesus spoke in a way that conveyed who He indeed was.
Upon hearing these teachings, many left Him. They forsake His teaching. They made multiple small decisions to keep moving farther away from the truth with every step they took in the opposite direction.
Jesus turned to the remaining disciples, the ones who chose to stay. He said to them,
“Do you want to go away as well?” (John 6:67)
Simon Peter uttered in response:
“Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God” (John 6:68-69).
You and I face the same decision.
Why do you follow Christ? Is it to be satisfied with miracles? Is it to see signs? Or is it for who He truly is and your need for Jesus?
There will come a time when people will not put up with the truth in the last days (2 Tim. 4:2). It will be harder to stand on the truth of who Jesus is as the gap between societal values and biblical truth widens.
Jesus was not simply a moral teacher. He was the Son of God.
It appears like a simple question, yet its answer possesses a resounding effect not only for the believer but for those whom they encounter and influence in their daily lives.
So when the teachings of Christ become harder to hear, when it requires more to stand amid the world, or you are faced with a decision as to whether you will hold to the truth…
Where will you go?
